If the amount of electricity you produce yourself is not enough, you can supplement it with electricity from the grid. With a home battery storage system, you can also charge at night, provided there is sufficient storage capacity. Without, this is only possible during the day.

Use combined subsidies

Tip: When purchasing your charging station, as well as the photovoltaic system and the electricity storage unit, pay attention to any subsidies that you may be able to claim. In Austria, these are generally only available on a temporary basis and usually at state level, city level or from individual electricity providers. Sometimes there are also combined subsidies for everything together.

Using the electric car to store photovoltaic electricity

The batteries installed in modern electric cars are becoming increasingly powerful. In conjunction with a photovoltaic system, they therefore offer the possibility of being used as an electricity storage unit.

This means you can not only charge your electric car with the power of the sun, but also store energy there for later use. All you need is a suitable next-generation electric car and an intelligent charging station that controls the charging process.

One example: While you are on vacation in summer, you do not use your car and decide to feed the electricity generated from the photovoltaic system into your car's battery.

At night, you can use the solar energy stored in the battery to switch on the lights and watch TV. This additional benefit is particularly useful if the electric car is your second car. This type of use is not yet widespread.

V2G technology

The use of electric cars as their own “power plant” or as intermediate electricity storage already works quite well in Japan. In this country, there are currently only a few e-cars, such as the Nissan Leaf, that are suitable for this. However, more models offering this technology will soon be coming onto the market. If you are interested in this option, you should find out whether your desired model supports this use before buying an e-car.

In general, with the spread of electric vehicles, there is always talk of V2G technology. V2G stands for “Vehicle to Grid”. The basic idea behind this system is that electric vehicles become part of an intelligent power grid, making it flexible to use and stable.

Charge several electric vehicles at once

In order to be able to charge electric vehicles at your building, the property must be connected to the electricity grid via a grid connection. If you do not have a photovoltaic system, all the electricity will be supplied to your building via this connection. It must therefore be ensured in advance that this connection (possibly together with the output of your own photovoltaic system) has sufficient power to charge several electric vehicles.

Whether the connected load is sufficient essentially depends on how many electric vehicles are to be charged at the same time. This is also known as the simultaneity factor. If the number is too large, you can consider expanding or upgrading the grid connection. However, as this is usually associated with very high costs, it is possible to set up a load management system that can be used to achieve a controlled reduction in charging power per vehicle.

Load management always distributes the optimum charging power to each vehicle currently being charged, but always takes the entire building load into account. Above a certain total output, load management is mandatory by law.
